Mars One plans human settlement on the Red Planet by 2027

The mission, to be funded from the sale of broadcasting rights, would see the first 4 settlers arrive on Mars in 2023 [Editor's note: in March 2015 Mars One announced that 2027 would be the target date. 

Mars One aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. Several unmanned missions will be completed, establishing a habitable settlement before carefully selected and trained crews will depart to Mars.

About Mission

The Mars 2020 rover will investigate a region of Mars where the ancient environment may have been favorable for microbial life, probing the Martian rocks for evidence of past life. Throughout its investigation, it will collect samples of soil and rock, and cache them on the surface for potential return to Earth by a future mission.
